Technology overview

Coherent’s technology portfolio is unusually broad for an optical-components company — it spans the full optical-and-laser stack from upstream materials (SiC, compound-semiconductor substrates) through device fab (InP EML, VCSEL, silicon photonics), subsystem assembly (ROADM, wave-shapers, transceivers), and finished systems (industrial fiber lasers, life-sciences instrumentation). For the photonics-research scope the load-bearing platforms are InP EML / VCSEL / silicon photonics in the Networking segment.

InP EML — duopoly with Lumentum

The electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) is the dominant transmitter source for 100G/200G/400G/800G fiber-transmission systems. Coherent and Lumentum together hold ~80%+ of the merchant EML supply. Coherent’s InP fab footprint is anchored in Sherman, TX (legacy Finisar) on 6-inch wafers — historically a competitive advantage versus Lumentum’s San Jose 4-inch line.

Coherent received a $2B common-stock investment from NVIDIA on March 2, 2026 (paired with NVDA’s parallel $2B Series A Convertible Preferred in Lumentum) — preserving the merchant InP EML duopoly while securing supply at both incumbents.

VCSEL — 3D-sensing and short-reach

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers — Coherent (via the Finisar 2019 acquisition) is the historical second-source supplier of Apple Face ID VCSELs (Apple invested $390M into Finisar’s Sherman TX VCSEL line via the Advanced Manufacturing Fund in May 2017). Also serves automotive LiDAR and short-reach (multi-mode) datacom optics.

Silicon photonics + transceivers — vertically integrated

Coherent runs an in-house silicon-photonics process (small-volume). Combined with InP source lasers and Finisar’s heritage transceiver assembly capability, Coherent ships finished 400G/800G/1.6T pluggable transceivers — vertically integrated end-to-end. This contrasts with Lumentum’s component-plus-Cloud-Light footprint and is structurally broader.

SiC substrates — the materials franchise

Silicon carbide (SiC) wafers for power-electronics (EV inverters, datacenter power, industrial). Coherent (via legacy II-VI) is one of the original SiC substrate producers globally, in competition with Wolfspeed, STMicroelectronics, and the rapidly expanding Chinese suppliers (TankeBlue, SICC). The SiC franchise is non-photonics but a meaningful revenue and margin contributor.

Industrial fiber lasers + life sciences

Coherent (via legacy Coherent Inc., 2022 acquisition) is a leading supplier of industrial fiber lasers for cutting/welding/additive manufacturing, plus life-sciences instrumentation (genomics sequencing, bioimaging). These are non-AI-photonics businesses but provide diversification.

2028 CPO pivot

Coherent has framed co-packaged optics as a 2028+ commercial-volume opportunity, with high-power DFB lasers integrated into NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X / Quantum-X Photonics CPO switches alongside Lumentum’s parallel supply. The vertical-integration depth (InP + SiPh + assembly) positions Coherent for CPO transceiver shipments as well as light-source supply.
